first edition in french published simultaneously with the English edition. Wood and Dawkins traveled throughout Asia Minor in the late 1840s and were at Palmyra in 1850. Wood published this acclaimed work in 1853, the first account of Palmyra to be illustrated with numerous detailed images after J. B. Borra, the Italian architect who accompanied them. William Halifax's study of the region, published in 1695, was nominally illustrated with fairly simple engravings. Blackmer, 1834; Fowler 443.
