first edition. Under the command of David Buchan on the HMS Dorothea and John Franklin on the HMS Trent, this futile 1818 expedition attempted to sail across the Arctic Ocean--the last such attempt by the Royal Navy. Beechey served as second-in-command under Franklin. Although written 25 years after the voyage, it is the only firsthand account of the expedition. One plate shows a boat crew being attacked by walruses (see illustration). Arctic Bibliography 1230; Books on Ice 2.11; Hill 97; Sabin 4349; TPL 1132.
