Additional Details

Chappell kept this journal aboard a British sloop of war en route to York Factory, where he had extensive dealings with the Inuit. The inscription reads "Edward Chappell from his affectionate sister H.L.C., N. London, Nov. 4th, 1838." No, Chappell wasn't given a copy of his own book. It was likely given by Hannah Loomis Chappell (1810-1842) of New London, CT to her brother Edward Chappell (1815-1881), namesake of the explorer but not a close relation.
