Expanded second edition. McClure commanded the HMS Investigator's 1850-54 search for Franklin via the Bering Strait. After becoming the first ship to successfully navigate the Beaufort Sea, McClure discovered and entered Prince of Wales Strait. When the ship became ice-bound, he sledged north to Melville Sound--thus becoming the first to traverse the Northwest Passage (albeit by ship and sledge). Arctic Bibliography 10563; Books on Ice 3.15.
