Additional Details

The first 84 photographs depict Admiral Richard E. Byrd's first Antarctic Expedition. Among the handful of captioned images are several named crew members including Admiral Byrd, Dr. Lawrence M. Gould, radio operators Carl Petersen and Malcolm Hanson, cameraman Joe Rucker, "Paul Siple the Boy Scout", Bernt Balchen, and men named McKinley, Parker, and Smith--all of whom served in the winter party at Byrd's "Little America" base on the Ross Ice Shelf in 1928. In addition to the two identifiable images of Byrd, others such as Balchen, Gould, Siple, and Ashley McKinley were notable polar explorers in their own right. The images show the ship which brought the explorers south, a group portrait of the team, the men resting in camp and in full gear outdoors, sled dogs, wildlife, and more. "Byrd Antarctic Expedition" can be clearly read on the tail of an airplane in one image. The final 46 photographs are mostly from the 1939 New York World's Fair.
