Additional Details

These designs were drawn by the renowned Arctic explorer Robert E. Peary (1856-1920) during his 1898-1902 expedition to Greenland. Several months later, he discovered Cape Morris Jesup, the northernmost point of Greenland.

The largest of these drawings is 8 x 20¾ inches, foxed. folded and stained. It shows a complete sledge, with the caption in Peary's hands: "Plan for snow sledge Jan 2 1900, length 14' 2", width shoes 3", completed Jan. 6 1900, R.E.P."

Also included are three sheets of graph paper, 7½ x 5½ inches, disbound from a notebook. One page has a caption in Peary's hand, "Sledges built at Etah in the fall of 1899 & winter of 1899-1900." Shaded sledge sections appear on 3 of the pages (one dated 5 January 1900 in Peary's hand), with some rough outlines on the verso of another.
