Additional Details

Dr. Isaac Israel Hayes, a young physician from a Quaker family, organized a privately funded voyage to the Arctic in 1860, during which time he claimed to have reached the fabled "Open Polar Sea," a mythical ice-free zone in the high northern latitudes. A steadfast explorer who gleaned knowledge from native Greenlanders or Polar Eskimos, Hayes influenced the course of Arctic discovery. Cf. Douglas Wamsley: Polar Hayes: The Life and Contributions of Isaac Israel Hayes, M.D., 307.
