Additional Details

Lieutenant Adolphus Greeley of the United States Army Signal Corps and 23 men set off to explore the northern Canadian Arctic in 1881. The relief vessels planned for 1882 and 1883 were unable to reach the party. By the time a third effort found the party on Cape Sabine in June 1884, cannibalism was suspected, and only seven men survived, one of whom died on the voyage home. This photograph shows the survivors two months after their rescue. Greeley is front and center.
