Sarratea served as the Argentine Consul to Chile in 1878 during the delicate negotiations which kept Argentina out of the War of the Pacific. This correspondence covers his distinguished diplomatic career, including 16 letters from Chilean president Aníbal Pinto, 11 from Argentine president Luis Sáenz Peña, more than 60 other letters received, and more than 50 retained copies of Sarratea''s outgoing letters.
