Additional Details

Order #12 celebrates "the surrender of large numbers of Indians lately hostile" and explains that "the basis of peace is simply that these Indians shall cease plundering and murdering." Order #24 commends several officers for their work in capturing the "straggling bands of Apaches still remaining at large." Two of these documents are signed by John G. Bourke, and the other by Nickerson, both of them acting as aides-de-camp to General Crook in the Apache Wars. Bourke later gained fame as a writer on the Apaches.
