Joseph King Fenno Mansfield (1803-1862) of Connecticut was a career military officer who later gave his life at Antietam as a Union General in the Civil War. These letters date from his time as a captain in the Corps of Engineers, helping to build Fort Pulaski near Savannah, GA. Brainard agreed to supply "14 stone cut complete according to plan left him (being stone for the bridge way of the demilune of Fort Pulaski)." with--a related letter from Henry Stannard Brainard to Captain Robert E. Lee (the future Confederate general), apologizing for the stains in a recent shipment of stone sent for use at Fort Hamilton, NY, where Lee was post engineer. Retained copy, Haddam, CT, 26 May 1842.
