RARE ROGERS GROUP (ART.) ROGERS, JOHN. Taking the Oath and Drawing Rations. Plaster sculpture, depicting a mother and her young son with a Union soldier. Approximately 23x12x9 inches, in the original taupe finish, with some evidence of wear and several tiny abrasions, lacking the glossy finish but devoid of the excessive wear usually associated with these figures. Rogers (1829-1904) was a prolific and popular American sculptor. His statues made fine works of art available to the middle class. Between 1859 and 1892 he sculpted and patented some 80 sculpted vignettes of everyday life and literary characters. According to the Smithsonian, "Taking the Oath was one of his 'most genuinely admired sculptures' and the one he acknowledged to be 'his best work.' Its sympathetic treatment found favor with both Northerners and Southerners."
His most popular works dealt with Civil War themes. Many Rogers groups have been heavily restored, re-painted, and covered in polychrome finishes. The present group bears its original finish.
