AN EXTRAORDINARY ALBUM OF CURRIER AND IVES LITHOGRAPHS (ART.) CURRIER AND IVES. Album containing 41 original chromolithographs, 13 x 17 3/8 inches. All but two are depictions of African Americans in stereotypical poses and situations; of these, 20 are heavy oil chromolithographs. With the exception of one plate, "Wrecked by a cow Catcher," with a one inch vertical closed tear in the lower blank margin, all are in excellent condition. The original late 19th-century binding (1/4 calf over pebble-grained cloth) is present, the front cover detached and most of the spine perished. New York: Currier and Ives, 1879-1890

Additional Details

Assembled, but not published, by someone possibly connected with the famous publishers. The name "Royce (?) G. Sewood, 1891" appears in pencil at the top of the first blank end-paper, as does another small pencil notation (undecipherable) on the inside of the rear board. The plates bear dates covering a ten-year span, and were printed using two distinct techniques. Twenty of the plates employ an oil-based ink, giving much more dimension to the images. The remaining twenty-two plates are normal chromolithographs. Most of the works are signed by Thomas Worth (1834-1917) in the plates, others are unsigned or by Cameron, and Kemble, who was noted for his stereotypical depictions of African Americans.
