David Clyde Driskell (1931-) was born in Eatonton, Georgia, into a sharecropper family who moved to North Carolina in the Appalachian mountains at age 5. He lived there until 1951, when he began attendance at Howard University. The present piece is an early one, done when the artist was 25 years old. Driskell today is recognized as one of the leading scholars in the field of African-American art and art history.
