Additional Details

Real estate developer and philanthropist William E. Harmon (1862-1928) started the Foundation that bore his name in the mid 1920's to provide an outlet for African American artists. In 1928, the Harmon Foundation sponsored the first exhibition of works created exclusively by African-American artists. Three years later, Harmon exhibits showcasing the latest winners began touring the country. The catalogues issued by the Foundation spanning more than two decades are a scarce and legendary resource for images of the works of artists like Sargent Johnson and Malvin Grey Johnson, to cite just a couple.
