Additional Details

Roy Elmer LaGrone (1921-1993) was an Arkansas native who flew in Italy with the 332d Fighter Group as one of the Tuskegee Airmen. After the war, he attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, graduating in 1949. He lived in New York City and New Jersey, and had a long career as an illustrator and graphic designer, retiring as an art director with Rutgers University. Much of his artwork depicted Air Force scenes; "Tuskegee's Heroes: Featuring the Aviation Art of Roy LaGrone" was published three years after his death. He was posthumously inducted into the New Jersey Aviation Hall of Fame in 2001.
This painting was done as a Pratt student in 1948. We trace only one other original LaGrone work at auction, a 1975 book illustration.
