First edition of the first substantial study of African-American artists, written by the first African-American Rhodes Scholar and a key figure in the Harlem Renaissance. It was printed as part of the Bronze Booklet series. It is inscribed "For Stefan Hirsch, in cordial friendship, Alain Locke, 1941" to a well-known German-American artist who was then teaching at the Art Students League of New York.
