THE NEWARK RIOTS (ART.) Newark (supplied title). Mixed-media collage 18 x 12, affixed to a sheet, 24 x 18 inches, covered with inscriptions of people from the Newark area, in appreciation for Curvin's work on behalf of the community. [Newark, circa 1970s]

Additional Details

A unique piece of art presented to Robert Curvin (1934-2015), a journalist and co-founder of Newark's chapter of CORE, who played a role in tamping down the anger surrounding the 1967 Newark riots. The piece is built upon a page of obituaries from a 1969 Newark newspaper overlaid with a peace symbol, flag, gun, dove, and other motifs.
