an early work, signed with her maiden name Jewel Woodard Simon (1911-1996), was a painter, sculptor, printmaker and musician, born in Houston Texas, She moved to Atlanta in 1939 where she made her home until her death. She was the first African American to be awarded a bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Atlanta University, studying under Hale Woodruff and Alice Dunbar at the University. She is cited in Cedric Dover's American Negro Art, and is well represented in the Hatch-Billops Collection at Emory University. See Igoe, 250 Years of Afro-American Art, pages 1098-1099.
