Artist and pioneer gallery owner Merton Simpson (1928--) was born in Charleston, South Carolina. He is one of the last surviving members of the so-called "spiral group" that at one time included Hale Woodruff, Romare Bearden and Norman Lewis. Lewis suggested the name "spiral" for the Archimedean spiral which is constantly expanding as it rises.
