The artist Loïs Mailou Jones (1905-1998) went to study in France in 1937, where she developed a lifelong friendship with white French artist Céline Tabary (1908–1993). Tabary followed Jones back to Washington in 1938, where they taught art classes together through the 1950s. Tabary often delivered work to juries for Jones to subvert ongoing discrimination in the art world. This portrait is a companion piece to one sold by Swann on 29 March 2018, lot 88, which was apparently done at the same sitting.
