Additional Details

Leroy Winbush (1915-2007) was born in Detroit. He moved to Chicago right after graduating from high school, and started working almost immediately as a sign painter. His work was of such high quality that he was able to form his own company nine years later, becoming the first African-American member of the Art Directors' Club of Chicago, and five years later becoming its president. His business was so successful that ebony Magazine profiled him in 1958 as "The Barnum of Bankers' Row." The first of these three early works was possibly done for a night club.
