Additional Details

Kane assembled "57 of the coolest cats [and kittens] in jazz," among them Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Gene Krupa, Mary Lou Williams, Roy Eldridge, Milt Hinton, and Lester Young, at 17 East 126th Street. The idea for the picture was Kane's, who was then a young art director at Esquire magazine. This was his first photo assignment, and the picture quickly became iconic.
