Robert Indiana gave the name "herm sculptures" to the works he created beginning in the 1960s from materials salvaged near Coenties Slip in Manhattan. "Herm" is a term usually applied to a type of stone sculpture from Greek antiquity in which the bust of a man was hewn from a block that was otherwise featureless except for the genitals, which were sculpted in the position on the block where they would be expected, were the sculpture of a complete figure.
