Additional Details

On 10 May 1849, 22 were killed and almost 100 protestors and police injured in the second bloodiest riot in New York City history (after the draft riots). The rioting, which historians have argued occurred due to class and ethnic conflicts, began when over 15,000 protestors gathered outside the Astor Place Opera House where disliked British actor William Macready was performing. Macready and American actor Edwin Forrest had been previously involved in a contentious and well-publicized feud.
