A group of 8 photographs depicting the 1946 Operation Crossroads detonation.
The images depicting Operation Crossroads, the first nuclear weapons detonation since the atomic bombing of Nagasaki in 1945. The photographs depict the moment of explosion and after as seen from land and through aerial photographs. Silver prints, the images measuring approximately 4 5/8x6 1/2 inches (11.7x16.5 cm.), and the reverse, the sheets slightly larger, each numbered in pencil, on verso, with the original mailing envelope sent to Captain Vanderkloot from Vice-Admiral Blandy. 1946

Additional Details

Admiral Blandy was in command of Operation Crossroads, which was intended to test the impact of the atomic bomb on naval warships. A target fleet of 95 warships, submarines, and auxiliary were brought to the islands for the testing of two atomic bombs.
