Additional Details

An early issue of Australia's first newspaper, founded in 1803. By this date, only three books had yet been printed in the young settlement. Famine stalked the land. An order for the rationing of bread appears on the first page. On the second page is a report on experiments for baking bread from potato flour. The third page informs that the Board of Magistrates seeks "the likeliest means of reducing the consumption of wheaten bread, and for rendering its distribution equal to every inhabitant without reference to rank or station." Also included are two substantial reports on early bushranger John Murphy. "Even single numbers prior to 1820 do not often occur in the market"--Ferguson, Bibliography of Australia 383.
