Teige was a leading figure of the European avant-garde of the 1920s and 1930s. He edited the most influential journals on Czech and international cultural developments and wrote profoundly original essays and books on the theory and criticism of art and architecture. The author Nezval was the founding figure of "poetism," a movement of poets and artists centered in Prague in the 1920s.
