Additional Details

In an effort to keep the Zeppelin Company afloat after the Treaty of Versailles wreaked havoc on Germany's dirigable inventory, Dr. Hugo Eckner approached the United States and proposed to build a large zeppelin for the military. The U. S. agreed and construction was begun in 1922. Upon its completion in 1924, Eckner himself flew the ship over th Atlantic to New Jersey. The Los Angeles remained in active duty until 1940.
