Additional Details

Wilbur and Orville Wright made national news with their 17 December 1903 flights at Kitty Hawk, but reports were based largely on distorted second-hand information. The Wrights issued their first substantial description of the flights in a press release on 5 January 1904. It appeared in a handful of newspapers on 6 January, and then in dozens more over the next week. Here is one of the first printings of this account, in a home-state newspaper, with the eye-catching headline "Flying Machine Problem Solved. Interesting Experiments Made by Two Ohio Men with a Machine of Their Own Creation." See Jakab, "The Published Writings of Wilbur and Orville Wright."
