The luxuriously appointed lighter-than-air ship the Hindenburg was launched in 1936 and legendary for the smoothness of its ride. ($720 was required for a round trip ticket.) On a return voyage from Germany, May 6, 1937, the zeppelin encountered difficulty landing in Lakehurst, N. J. and burst into flame. The lot contains a complete range of pictures including spectacular views of the explosion; promotional views depicting the interior; scenes of Dr. Hugo Eckener, Commodore of the Zeppelin fleet; a disaster list; rescue efforts; and other photographs relating to the aftermath of the tragedy. Finally, the lot contains prints of the airship's 1936 maiden voyage, and a surreal scene of the ship hovering over the island of Manhattan.
