Joel Barlow (1754-1812) was a Connecticut native who served as U.S. Minister to France, but is best known as author of epic poems such as the Columbiad and Hasty Pudding. He left no children. This collection consists of the correspondence and personal papers of his various heirs: brother Aaron and Daniel Barlow; nephews Samuel, Stephen, and Thomas Barlow and Lemuel Olmstead; and their descendants including members of the Olmstead and Preble families, particularly grand-nephew Lemuel G. Olmstead of New York, who was preparing a collection of Barlow''s works. This collection does not include any material in Joel Barlow''s hand, but several items do relate to the famed author, including 19th-century bibliographical and genealogical notes. A 15 October 1813 letter by Stephen Barlow discusses his brother Joel''s will. Another group of letters by Samuel Barlow, 1817-1824, relates to the settlement of Gallipolis, OH, which Joel Barlow helped populate as an agent of the Scioto Company. A pencil drawing dated 1855 depicts Aaron Barlow''s homestead in Redding, CT, where the Columbiad is supposed to have been written. The collection also includes 7 books which came from Kalorama, Joel Barlow''s home in Washington, DC, although most are dated after his death.
