Additional Details

All Nations was active from 1912 to 1918. Unusual for the time, they featured players of several races. They were based in Des Moines and later Kansas City, and played a barnstorming schedule outside the formal bounds of the Negro Leagues or "Organized Baseball." In this image, "All Nations" can be seen running down the front seam of each uniform, though the full name of the sponsor (Smith?) cannot be seen. The player fifth from the left appears to be José Mendez, the great Cuban pitcher who was recently elected to the Hall of Fame. As for the date, photographer J.L. Bellew was active in Waseca only in 1914, according to the Minnesota Historical Society.
