Additional Details

Sportsman''s Park was the venerable home of the St. Louis Cardinals. When the team was purchased by August Busch in 1953, he commissioned a series of renovations, including this neon-highlighted left-field scoreboard which advertised his family''s most famous product. The Anheuser-Busch eagle appeared to flap its wings whenever a Cardinal hit a home run. Left field at Sportsman''s Park was distinguished territory: the great Stan Musial was stationed under this sign for much of his career, and Lou Brock first came to prominence here as well. The scoreboard was designed by Artkraft Strauss, a New York firm which also designed many of the neon signs in New York''s Times Square.
