Additional Details

the first translation of the entire bible by a woman. This scrupulously literal translation was undertaken by Julia Evelina Smith, a suffragist in her eighties from Glastonbury, CT, and appears with her lively introduction. The attached clipping describes Smith's family. Her father left the ministry because he felt it was wrong for anyone "to stand between any person and his God," and it describes "Miss Julia" as "the survivor of her race." Only one other copy seen at auction since 1988. "As a result of the use of the same English word for the same Hebrew or Greek word, the English of this translation is quite unnatural. The work was published at Miss Smith's own expense"--Hills 1918.
