first royal quarto bible in english published in america. "The two Thomas Bibles of 1791 were without doubt far in advance of any other publications of the same kind that had appeared in America in point of typography, excellence of paper, binding, and general execution"--Wright, Early American Bibles, pages 74-85. Although the colophon to the New Testament calls for 50 plates, it was also sold with just the two frontispieces as seen here (see Wright, page 81). Issued in one volume, but here rebound in 4 volumes in 1830 "for convenience," as stated on front free endpaper. Evans 23185; Hills 30. Provenance: Joseph Stone (1750-1837) of Worcester; sister Rhoda Stone's son Abel Flagg (1780-1828).
