Additional Details

the studebaker family bible with a family register between the Old and New Testaments with the original owner's name -- Rebecka Mohler -- hand-colored. This register records the births and deaths of her family from her 1820 marriage to John Stewthebaker through his death in 1877. The family adopted the Studebaker spelling circa 1832. Most notable are the births of Henry in 1826, Clement in 1831, Mohler in 1833, Peter in 1836, and Jacob in 1844. These five were the founding partners of the Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company, established in 1868. John Mohler Studebaker (1833-1917) survived to see the company transformed into a major automobile manufacturer.
The bible itself is also of note, as the first German-American bible printed outside of Philadelphia and as the first bible printed in Reading. "In typography and general appearance it resembles the Saur Bible, and may be considered a continuation of it"--Wright, Early Bibles of America, page 49. Shaw-Shoemaker 7984.
