Additional Details

The first european-language bible printed in america. The preface explains that the publication was undertaken because "so many poor Germans come to the country who do not all bring Bibles . . . the well-to-do usually care for themselves and theirs." Saur later announced that the price for a bound copy was 18 shillings, "but to the poor and needy we have no price" (see Wright, Early Bibles of America, pages 32 and 43). Darlow & Moule 4240; Evans 5128 (calls this the second impression with altered title pages).
