French binders Henri Hardy and Gaston Pilon were master craftsmen who, before emigrating to the United States, worked for Trautz-Bauzonnet, Cuzin-Mercier, Chambolle-Duru, and Marius Michel. Having arrived in Cleveland working as The Club Bindery and The Rowfant Bindery, they settled in Long Island with Doubleday, Page under their Country Life Press, employing the imprint "The French Binders, Garden City."
