Additional Details

This handbill might be regarded as a "missing link" between the early use of the black panther logo and its adoption by the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense in California. The first appearances of the logo were circa 1966 in materials used by the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee / Lowndes County Freedom Party in Alabama. Here, SNCC leader Julian Bond makes a speaking appearance in California, and is shown with the two iconic Alabama uses of the panther logo: "Move On Over or We'll Move On Over You" and "One Man--One Vote." A word bubble from the lower panther announces "The Black Panther is Coming!" The Black Panther Party for Self-Defense had just been founded that past 15 October, had opened its first office in January, and was not yet quite a household name. This flier seems to have no direct link with Huey Newton's group; it was issued by the far-left Southern Californians for New Politics. Julian Bond is here billed as "distinguished legislator from the Georgia Assembly . . . and Freedom Fighter from darkest America."
