Additional Details

A rally in Oakland's DeFremery Park, held on the eve of the first day of Newton's murder trial. It is illustrated with a Black Panther logo, a rifle, and a portrait of Newton by Emory Douglas. Somehow during the layout process, the panther's rear claws were transplanted several inches away, to the left of the title. Speakers included Bobby Seale, Eldridge Cleaver, David Hilliard, Kathleen Cleaver, and Huey's brother Melvin Newton. The San Bernardino County Sun reported the next day that a crowd of about 3,000 to 4,000 was in attendance, with "an orderly, friendly and almost picnic-like atmosphere." We trace no other examples of this poster.
