Additional Details

This sign was apparently created for a May Day rally at Yale University in support of jailed Black Panther leaders Ericka Huggins and Bobby Seale. A contemporary magazine report described seeing many of these signs at the rally. UPI reported that many local merchants boarded over their storefronts with plywood in anticipation of rioting, and then pasted "Help the Black Panthers, Keep the Peace" signs on the plywood for extra protection. See Sheehy, "The Consequences of Panthermania," in New York Magazine, 23 May 1970; and the Albuquerque Journal, 1 May 1970 (among the many other newspapers which ran the UPI story).
