a rare and important early poster for a most unusual campaign. The coming together of the Peace and Freedom Party with the Panthers was an attempt to bring white and black radical politics together in a meaningful way in a year of political chaos. When Lyndon B. Johnson decided not to run for a second term, Democrats were desperate to find a replacement. The Peace and Freedom Party thought that Cleaver might have a real chance given the divisiveness in both parties. Cleaver could not have served, though, because of his age. Cleaver and his running mate Judith Mage received 36,571 votes (0.05% ).
