Additional Details

The first issue of a radical African-American magazine. Among its dozens of articles are "What is a Jive-Ass Nigger?" by Soul City promoter Floyd McKissick; "The Wisdom of Malcolm X"; "The Image of the Black Man in Films" by actor Wesley Gale; and less controversial material such as recipes and community photographs. Perhaps most interesting is a cover article by Mumia Abu-Jamal, then only 17 years old but already a veteran of the Philadelphia branch of the Black Panthers. He contributes a vivid piece titled "Black Man Loves Foe and Hates Himself," about his experience distributing black liberation leaflets on a Philadelphia bus, and arguing with a passenger about Mayor Frank Rizzo. On the final page, the masthead notes that copyright is held by Harry B. Steward. We can find no other mention of Black Rhetoric at auction, in OCLC, or on line.
