Additional Details

After being subjected to racial slurs and a cross burning, Black activists at Cornell University occupied the school's Willard Straight Hall student union building on 18 April 1969. A brawl with counter-protesters from a Cornell fraternity led them to bring in rifles for their own protection. Two days later, the university administration negotiated an amnesty and the activists vacated the building. Associated Press photographer Steve Starr of Albany, NY captured the moment; this image won him a Pulitzer Prize in 1970.
