Additional Details

first and only edition, scarce. George Washington Murray (1853-1926), was born a slave in South Carolina. Known as the "Black Eagle," he played an important role in the early Republican Party. He was delegate to several Republican conventions and became a member of the House of Representatives from South Carolina. Murray saw the deplorable state of the Negro as stemming in great part from "training" as slaves, resulting in a "diseased spirit." He believed that until that mindset could be overcome, the race would be hamstrung in its efforts to rise up and reach its potential.
