The cornerstone of palm literature. Originally issued in portfolios, but here nicely bound. Lacking the portrait frontispiece. Title-page in Volume 1 chipped at edges and backed, but without loss of text. Initial plate in Volume 1 with small closed tear; plates 88 and 89 in Volume 1 with numerous closed tears. With the half-titles; half-title in second volume with repairs. Nissen, Botany 1660, mistakenly calling for 2 portrait frontispieces. This error seems to have influenced virtually every auction catalogue description for years, with each description noting a single portrait frontispiece and that one was lacking. The present copy is lacking the single frontispiece, but it is supplied in facsimile. This copy accompanied by a reduced format facsimile reprint of the monograph - with the single portrait frontipiece (Rio de janeiro: Expressão e Cultura, 1989).
