(BOULDER DAM PROJECT, NEVADA) Album with 120 exceptional photographs attributed to Ben Glaha documenting the construction of the Boulder Dam, "the greatest dam in the world." A lengthy series of images that captures the breadth and scope of this remarkable engineering project. The photographs reflect the work of an accomplished photographer who discovered that "sweet spot" where industry and modernism beautifully converge. Silver prints, the images measuring 6 5/8x4 1/2 inches (16.8x11.4 cm.), and the reverse, the sheets slightly larger, mounted two per page on recto only. Oblong folio, leatherette with a twin-bolt binding, edgewear; ties; contents crisp and bright. 1933-34
Chief photographer Ben Glaha was hired by the U.S . Department of the Interior, Bureau of Reclamation to document the construction of the Boulder Dam from 1931-1940. Curator Willard Van Dyke wrote about Glaha's pictures in Camera Craft magazine, "Compositionally perfect, his work never loses sight of the more important human thing back of the steel and concrete. His prints are living documents of the heat, the sweat, the effort, and the pain endured by the workers tht the dam may be built."
Glaha delivered stunning documentary images while also producing prints that were exhibited in museums and galleries as works of art. Although Glaha's Hoover Dam images were widely published, he was not usually given personal credit and therefore his name remains largely unknown.
