Carte-de-visite-sized albumen print, the image measuring 3 1/2x2 1/4 inches (8.9x5.7 cm.), the blue period mount slightly larger, with the notation Emperor of Mexico and a date, in pencil, on a white paper label below the photograph on mount recto. 1864-67

Maximilian's rule was characterized by financial disaster, political weakness, and betrayal. His execution reflected the refusal of the Mexcian people to accept a foreign prince. The portrait is attributed to Matthew Burgess, Mathew Brady's assistant.
