Additional Details

The brig Brutus was in 1835 one of several American vessels captured and destroyed by the Brazilian government during this period. The claims of the captain and his heirs took many years to wind through the channels of law and diplomacy. An 1849 convention between Brazil and the United States finally allowed partial payment of this and similar claims. This archive was the working file of Washington lawyer Philip R. Fendall, who took over the case on behalf of claimant Joseph Graham of Buenos Aires. Fendall was at that time the district attorney for the District of Columbia. Most of this archive consists of letters in English, with a few additional documents in Spanish.
